These little balls of energy are filled with good things like potassium and fiber. They are easy for children to make on their own, as there are no sharp objects involved. Plus, they are only filled with five easily accessible ingredients.

If your children grow tired of the banana and oat combination, they can easily switch out the ingredients. Instead of oats, they can use chia seeds, dried fruit, or flaked coconut. 

2. Frozen Banana Pops

This recipe is sure to be a hit in your household. Just have your kids mash up a banana and then mix it with granola. Then, roll it into balls and squish it onto popsicle sticks and dip it into some yogurt. Finally, freeze for a couple of hours and you’ve got yourself a tasty summer treat!

Your children can adjust the recipe in many different ways. They can dip the pops into coconut or even almond flakes. The options are endless!

3. Ants on a Log

Packed with protein and veggies, this classic recipe is sure to keep the kids entertained for a minute or two. If your child isn’t a fan of celery, switch it out for carrots, or even a banana. The same goes for the peanut butter. This can be swapped for yogurt or cream cheese. There’s a variation out there for every child!

4. Hummus With Veggie Sticks

If you’re keen to get your little one munching on veggies, then hummus and veggie sticks could be a winner. Not only are crunchy vegetables, like carrots, cucumber, and celery sticks great for your health, but they also act as natural toothbrushes, scrubbing away food particles and bacteria. 

The great thing about making hummus at home is there are so many different varieties. Why not try sweet potato hummus, spinach hummus, or even peanut butter hummus?

5. Yogurt Bark

There are only two ingredients to this recipe: fruit and Greek yogurt. Of course, your kids can change it up however they please. One day, they can top it with raspberries, and another, nuts. Then one day, maybe they get a little adventurous and add raisins, strawberries, and almond slices.

This recipe requires very little adult supervision. Just throw the yogurt in the bottom of the pan, top it with whatever sounds good at the time, then get it in the freezer!

6. Pizza Crackers

If it’s called pizza, the kids will like it, right? These crackers are cream cheese-covered crackers topped with fruit. Alternatively, you can use Greek yogurt as a topping, or whatever else sounds good at the time. 

7. Banana Sushi

If your kid likes bananas, they will more than likely fall in love with this “sushi.” All they have to do to prepare this nutritious snack is peel a banana, cover it in their favorite toppings, then slice it with a butter knife. Simple!

The recipe has several variations for different sushi flavors, including “coconut sushi” or “chia seed sushi.” But in the long run, this recipe can be adjusted to fit each child’s individual taste buds.

8. Peanut Butter and Jelly Tacos

If your kid is sick of having the same sandwich every day, why not shake things up just a bit by making it into a taco? This consists of a slice of bread for the shell, your classic peanut butter and jelly, then whatever fruit you have on hand. You, as the adult, might need to slice up some of the fruit for this one, or cut off the crust, but the kids should be able to do the rest on their own!

9. Frozen Yogurt Raspberries

This simple recipe is definitely going into my own family’s snack rotation. It consists of only two ingredients: raspberries and Greek yogurt. First, fill a ziplock with some yogurt and throw it in the freezer for a while. Once it hits the consistency you desire, cut off the corner of the bag and let the kids fill each individual raspberry with the tasty filling. You can even top these treats with some poppy seeds to make them even more interesting. 

10. Toddler Snack Mix

Having the toddlers help with snack time can be an adventure, to say the least. Why not have them help make their own specialized trail mix? This will help with that hand-eye coordination as they take handfuls of their favorite treats and drop them into the bag. Admittedly, they might eat their fill in the process, but memories will certainly be made!

In this situation, the frenulum, that thin piece of tissue that connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth, is too tight or too short. This results in a limited range of motion for the tongue, making it challenging for babies to breastfeed and swallow. If the tongue tie isn’t corrected during infancy, it can also lead to speech issues. 

A lip tie is a similar condition in which the thin piece of tissue that connects the upper lip to the gum tissue above the front teeth is too tight or too short, resulting in the same concerns as with a tongue tie. Thankfully, a simple frenectomy procedure can release the tongue or lip tie.

How to know if your child has a tongue tie or a lip tie. 

It can be alarming and frustrating for new parents when their baby has trouble latching on for feeding. The last thing they want is a condition that keeps their children from getting the nutrients they need to thrive. For this reason, knowing what to look for that might indicate your child has a tongue or lip tie can help you take steps to get it corrected sooner than later.

1. Struggles With Breastfeeding

The most significant indicator that your child might have one of these conditions is difficulty latching on or staying latched during feeding. They may also have trouble transferring milk effectively, resulting in poor weight gain. And ankyloglossia can be harder to detect in a child who is exclusively bottle-fed, as bottles do not have the same restriction of tongue movement as there is when breastfeeding. You may also hear abnormal clicking sounds when your baby is trying to feed.

Further, if your baby has a tongue or lip tie, the mother might experience nipple pain from the poor latch or because the baby is gumming and chewing the nipple while feeding. If you are experiencing this with your baby, talk to your dentist for babies with a tongue tie in Vancouver. 

2. Speech Delays

Tongue and lip ties can impact the development of speech, particularly the ability to produce certain sounds, such as “l,” “r,” “s,” and “th.” Because these conditions are usually caught earlier in breastfed babies, if a child was bottle-fed or was fortunate enough to breastfeed successfully, despite their tongue or lip tie, you might not realize there is a problem until your child starts learning to talk.

3. Difficulty consuming solid foods.

When your baby moves on to solid foods, you may notice that they struggle to eat solid foods or move food around their mouth. The restricted movement of their tongue can make it harder for them to chew and swallow. And kids with a tongue tie may have weaker oral muscles or difficulty coordinating their movements, which adds to the challenge of chewing and swallowing solid foods.

4. Emotional and Social Issues

Though this symptom might not occur until your child is older, it’s not uncommon for kids with a tongue tie or lip tie to become frustrated or anxious when they have difficulty eating and speaking. They may find that they don’t talk as clearly as their friends or that their friends and classmates can’t understand them.

What to do if your child has a tongue tie or lip tie?

Everyone is born with a frenulum. The membrane attaches the tongue to the base of the mouth. You’re looking for an excessively thick, short, or strong frenulum. Here’s how to check your child’s frenulum for signs of ankyloglossia.

  1. With clean, thoroughly washed hands, lift your child’s tongue or upper lip to expose the area where the frenulum is located.
  2. Look for a thin band of tissue connecting the underside of the tongue or upper lip to the mouth or gum tissue floor, respectively.
  3. Check the length and thickness of the frenulum. A normal frenulum should be thin and flexible, while a tight or thick frenulum will restrict movement and affect function. You can also feel the frenulum with your finger to assess its tension and flexibility.

If the frenulum is tight and doesn’t seem to have much movement, this is an indicator that your child could benefit from a laser frenectomy. That Adorable, Gummy Smile

Many parents do not realize that dental care starts before your baby even cuts that first tooth. Before teething officially begins, it is best to wipe their gums with a clean damp washcloth. Infants produce less saliva than adults, so they need a little help keeping the bacteria down. This also helps your child get used to the sensation of having something in their mouth before it’s time to introduce the toothbrush.

The First Toothbrush

As soon as that first pearly white tooth peeks through, it’s time to break out the infant toothbrush. These are equipped with soft bristles, making them easy on your child’s gums. They are smaller than a children’s toothbrush, making it easier to get into those hard-to-reach places. They come in all sorts of designs and colors, some even have three sides to help get every nook and cranny in one go. This is definitely helpful when your toddler refuses to sit still. Many first-time parents aren’t sure when they can expect their child to start cutting their first tooth. Just like other milestones in children, don’t compare your child to any other child, because each develops at their own rate. However, you can use this as a guide to see where your baby stands in comparison to other babies.

Maybe they’re born with it.

Did you know that some babies are born with a tooth or two that have already erupted? They are called natal teeth and only happen about 1 in every 2,000 births. So while it is uncommon, parents shouldn’t be shocked if their baby is born with teeth already erupted. There is no reason to worry about the baby’s teeth, unless there is a problem when it comes to feeding your new baby.

Babies can also have neonatal teeth, which are teeth that appear within a few weeks of being born. These types of teeth are even more rare than natal teeth. These types of teeth often appear quickly, so your baby might not experience any of the normal teething symptoms.

So, when does the first tooth usually erupt?

While every baby is different, most babies will experience their first tooth eruption around six to nine months.

Your baby’s first teeth are normally the bottom two front teeth. Those are known as the central incisors. The next teeth to appear are usually the top four front teeth, which are known as the central and lateral incisors.

A baby’s teeth usually erupt in pairs, or two at a time. Their teeth also normally come in at a rate of four new baby teeth every six months. Your baby will continue to get their baby, or primary, teeth until they are close to two and a half years old. 

A child gets about 20 primary teeth, and they should all have erupted by the time they are close to the age of three, with the molars being the last teeth to erupt in your child’s mouth.

If you are looking for an average time table of when your child should get teeth, here is what a pediatrician or dentist will say:

  • 4 teeth before the first birthday
  • 8 teeth by 15 months old
  • 12 teeth by a year and a half
  • 16 teeth around baby’s second birthday

All About Teething

Before your child’s teeth erupt, or break through the gums, they will experience teething, and those symptoms can include the following:

  • Chewing on various items
  • Crying
  • Drooling
  • Face rash from excessive drooling
  • Flushed cheeks
  • Irritability
  • Pulling on their ears
  • Refusing to eat, or having a hard time eating
  • Slight fever of around 99 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Swollen or sore gums
  • Trouble sleeping

Not all babies will experience these symptoms of teething, but they are the most common symptoms that teething babies have. In fact, sometimes a baby won’t show any symptoms of teething at all and parents will be surprised to see the small white tooth erupting from the gum.

How to Soothe a Teething Baby

As your baby begins teething, you might be looking for ways to help comfort them. One of the best home remedies for teething is using a smooth, cold object against your baby’s gums where they are teething. Don’t use something that is frozen, because that is too cold. Instead, use a teething ring that has been chilled, and allow your baby to suck on that to help them soothe their gums. You can also help relieve your baby’s teething pain by gently massaging their gums with a clean finger or knuckle. If your baby is already eating solids, a chilled fruit or vegetable can help relieve some teething pain and help your baby find some relief.

So enter the idea of a mouth full of metal braces, and it should be no surprise that your teen has a strong opinion—against them. If your preteen is reluctant to get braces, we have some recommendations on mitigation strategies to help your child come around.

Preteen reluctant to get braces?

If your preteen is reluctant to get braces, we can help. Dr. Mo and our dental team have helped parent after parent, and teen after teen, get comfortable with the idea of braces. Here are some of our suggestions to help your preteen understand the benefits of braces and give you the buy-in you desire.

1. Understand the root cause of the concern.

Sometimes, parents have told us that they simply tell their children they are getting braces, and that is that. Whatever concern their child had, there was no discussion, and the orthodontic treatment was scheduled for a specific date. But we have found that simply directing your child and making them feel like they have no choice isn’t always the best strategy. So, make sure you are in a reasonable frame of mind (never discuss an issue when you are angry or frustrated), and take the time to discuss what your preteen is thinking. Understand why they don’t want braces.

Maybe your preteen is embarrassed that they will need braces. Perhaps they are afraid that the treatment will hurt. Maybe they have dental anxiety. Or maybe they believe that their braces will set off metal detectors or some other braces myth. Whatever the reason, trust us, we’ve heard it all. And the key here is to acknowledge how your preteen is feeling. Take the time to listen and understand their concerns, and then partner with the team at Must Love Kids Pediatric Dentistry to overcome those worries.

2. Address the concerns.

Now that you know the root cause of your preteen’s reluctance to get braces, it is crucial to address it. If your child is concerned about the cost, be open and honest about it. Let your child know how medical and dental insurance works to help pay for their orthodontic treatment, and be honest about how the balance will be handled. Often, kids just want to be in the know. This is also a great opportunity to explain to your child that the benefits of braces far outweigh the costs. For example, your child can anticipate experiencing the following benefits.

  • Improved speech, chewing, breathing, and sleep
  • Self-confidence and self-esteem boost once those braces come off
  • The teenage years are the best time for braces because it is possible to reposition teeth and the jaw while they’re still growing
  • The ability to share their own braces story with younger siblings and friends who are starting on their own braces journey (preteens love to be part of the dialogue)

If their concern is about something other than money, discuss those concerns together. And this is where the opportunity to clear up misunderstandings come into play.

3. Clear up any misunderstandings.

Sometimes, preteens fear getting braces because they don’t understand the process. Aside from explaining to your child how braces can improve their dental health, ensure they know what to expect at their first braces appointment. As we said earlier, adolescents are beginning to figure out who they are. Part of this means they want to feel like they are not only part of the decision but also in the know about what is to come.

Explain to your child that the appointment to get their braces will take about one to two hours. Though getting braces can be somewhat uncomfortable, it will not be painful. And if they are concerned about discomfort, let them know that they can take an over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen in advance to make it a bit easier. During the appointment, Dr. Mo will prep and clean the surfaces of their teeth, place the braces on the teeth, and then insert the wire and ligature tie to hold it all together.

The amount of time your child will have their braces will vary depending on the amount of correction needed. But, most kids will wear their metal braces for one to two years. What is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence, often referred to as EQ or EI, is defined by the Cambridge Dictionary as “the ability to understand and control your own feelings, and to understand the feelings of others and react to them in a suitable way.” This is a useful skill for everyone to learn, and having children in tune with how they feel and how others feel at an early age can make them more successful when managing their emotions and relationships throughout the years.

What are the benefits of emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence has many benefits, and the earlier a child understands their emotions, the better. Many studies have concluded that people who have high EQ actually have a higher IQ, often scoring better on standardized tests and having higher overall grades in school. One study that was posted in the American Journal of Public Health suggests that children with a high EQ by kindergarten were able to share, cooperate, and follow directions better than their counterparts and were more likely to obtain college degrees later in life.

Having a high EQ can also help children—and even adults—build stronger relationships and friendships. This is because a high EQ can help people manage conflict and maintain deeper and more personal connections with other people.

If a child is in tune with how they feel and are able to vocalize their feelings, adults—and even other children—are better able to understand the child’s feelings and can better help the child. For instance, if a child is sad and can vocalize why they are sad, not only can the child try self-soothing techniques, but anyone else can also help the child work through their sadness appropriately.

Learn to label emotions.

An important component of having a high EQ is learning to put a label on how you are feeling. The best way for parents to help build their child’s EQ is by talking about emotions.

If a child is upset because they weren’t chosen first to play a game, a parent can ask the child why they are sad, and come up with a solution for how they are feeling.

The most important thing for a parent is to show their child empathy. Address the emotions—your child has a right to feel what they are feeling. Just because you, as a parent, don’t react the way your child does to an emotion doesn’t mean you can’t validate their feelings. Everyone reacts differently to different situations, and it is important to understand this when teaching your child about emotional intelligence.

Sometimes, using pictures of faces with various emotional responses can help children put labels on how they are feeling.

Ask the child why they are sad, and what can be done to change it. Don’t forget to work on labeling good emotions too, like joy and excitement. Having an understanding of all emotions is important to having a well rounded child.

Learn to express emotions.

Once a child understands what emotions are and how to put labels on them, it’s important to teach children how to express these emotions in a healthy way. If a child is upset, throwing a temper tantrum or a toy doesn’t solve anything. Instead, teach children to express that they are feeling upset with their words. Ask them to describe how they are feeling, and then work on a solution for solving the situation that made them upset.
